Watch and chat!

You can ask your baby questions about what they're doing and feeling at any age.

You can do this any time your baby is awake.

When you watch your baby, you might notice their face change, the noises they make or how they move. Spend some time watching and really pay attention.

Think about what your baby might be thinking or feeling.

Then ask questions like: "Is that a happy face?", "Is that a puzzled noise?"

Your baby can't answer yet, but you can respond to happy faces with a smile or laugh.

Here are some of the feelings you might be able to spot, even before your baby knows what they are:

  • Happy
  • Sad
  • Confused
  • Tired
  • Frustrated
  • Bored
  • Excited

Good to know

By naming feelings, you are helping your baby to start to recognise their own feelings. This helps them become self-aware.
