Make a shopping list

This fun activity will get your little one chatting about what food they like.

This activity helps your child make their own ‘shopping list’. It encourages them to speak about their favourite meals and foods. To do this activity you’ll need:

  • Paper
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue or sticky tape
  • Food magazines or clean, empty food packages

Sit down with your child and start making a ‘shopping list’ of their favourite foods. Look for pictures of the things on the list. Then cut out pictures and labels and help your child stick it next to the item on the list.

Chat as you go and ask your child lots of questions like “What do you like for breakfast?” or “What’s your favourite?”

Then when you go to the shops, try to find the items on your list together.

Good to know

Shopping lists help your child recognise that words have meaning. They also help with starting to understand the concept of maths.
