Reading I-spy

You can turn your child’s favourite books into a fun game with I-spy.

Encourage your child to choose a book for you to look at together.

Go through the book, reading the story and pointing at the pictures. You can use the pictures to play I-spy.

For example, if there’s a drawing of an elephant, say ‘I spy with my little eye, something beginning with E’. You can drop clues to help your child guess. Try to describe colours and shapes.

If they like the game, encourage them to lead and choose something for you to guess.

Praise them when they guess the right answer.

Good to know

This game encourages children to concentrate and look carefully. These are skills they’ll need for reading one day.
